Issues

In addition to our core work on voting and elections, the League of Women Voters advocates for issues that its membership chooses. In order to advocate for an issue, the League must have a position that has been adopted at the state or federal level or studied and come to consensus on as a local League.
In 2023-2024 LWV Wilmette is focusing on six  core advocacy  issues.
Community Education, Engagement & Empowerment. Our goal is to advocate for open and transparent governing bodies and to facilitate community understanding of the workings of our local governing boards.
Environment. Through research, collaboration and advocacy, the LWV Wilmette will contribute to robust Village initiatives stemming from the Sustainability Plan; Continue work to protect our local environment; Promote cleaner, quieter lawn care practices; Reduce plastics; Protect the Great Lakes; Promote renewable energy sources, Oppose reliance on fossil fuel and support clean energy and water policies.
Inclusive Community. We will continue to proactively educate the community and facilitate a deeper understanding of inclusivity; Advocate for local government policy to ensure greater inclusivity; and Monitor progress towards achieving their stated diversity, equity and inclusion goals. We will continue to actively monitor Village efforts to develop more affordable housing.
Fair Elections. There will be a special focus on misinformation and disinformation, as well as advocacy for Voting Rights and other topics that ensure every citizen has the right to participate in our electoral process.
Reproductive Rights: Educate members and the community on the state of reproductive choice in Illinois and at the federal level; Advocate for policies that protect reproductive freedom at the local, state and federal level and in areas where reproductive rights are endangered
Gun Violence Prevention: Participate in gun violence prevention coalitions on the state and local level; plan education and advocacy opportunities for the coming year.
