Gun Violence Prevention

LWVUS POSITION IN BRIEF

The League of Women Voters believes that the proliferation of handguns and semi-automatic assault weapons in the United States is a major health and safety threat to its citizens. The League supports strong federal measures to limit the accessibility and regulate the ownership of these weapons by private citizens. The League supports regulating firearms for consumer safety. (As adopted in 1990 and amended at 1994 and 1998 Conventions.)

The LWV-Wilmette is an active partner in the Coalition created by the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence.  In the past two years, Illinois has made a significant impact legislatively through passage of the Gun Dealer Licensing Bill and the Firearm Restraining Order, but there is more work to be done
This year, the LWV- Wilmette will:
  • Stay vigilant to keep passed legislation from being reversed
  • Educate membership on GVP issues and provide advocacy opportunities
  • Investigate state and local legislative opportunities for GVP
  • Provide action opportunities for members
