2022 program recap
The Student Government Leader (SGL) program made a successful return in 2022, given the ongoing battle with Covid 19. After its 2021 hiatus, both LWV-Wilmette and District 39 remained committed to continuing this legacy of offering students this important local civics experience. With the dedicated guidance of Eric Resis, WJHS 8th Grade Assistant Principal, and Erin Schwarz, WJHS 8th Grade Differentiation Support Teacher, all program details were re-designed to follow Covid protocols, including limited enrollment, 6’ social distancing and masking.
This year’s program involved twenty-six (26) 8th graders from WJHS experiencing the role and responsibilities of local government through the operations of the Wilmette Village Board.

Current Calls to Action
The Reproductive Rights action focus team will plan educational programs and develop opportunities to join the fight. Working with the LWV in Kansas, we did phone banking to urge voters to vote no on an amendment that would have allowed further erosion of Reproductive Rights. We also sent GOTV postcards to residents of Lake County urging them to research candidates for Illinois Supreme Court. We are hosting an educational webinar about the state of abortion rights in Illinois.
More events and opportunities to get involved will continue throughout the year. To join the Reproductive Rights Action Focus team, email LWVW Co-President Anne Sullivan.

NT Township Supports Carbon Fee & Dividend
In response to the advisory referendum question on the New Trier Township ballot in April 2021, more than two-thirds of New Trier Township voted in favor of a carbon fee and dividend policy. Going forward, the LWV-Wilmette and coalition partners, such as the Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), will bring this support to the attention of our members of Congress and continue to advocate for climate-friendly policies. |
Protect the Remnant Prairie Today
While Illinois is called the Prairie State, less than 0.01% of our native prairie landscape actually remains today. We cannot afford to lose another acre, which is why it is so critical to save Bell Bowl Prairie, a historic natural landscape in Rockford, IL that supports rare and endangered species. This remnant prairie, which has not been plowed, grazed or developed for 12,000 years, is slated for destruction to accommodate the Rockford Airport expansion, Activism from conservationists has resulted in a temporary victory that will halt any construction until March 2022. However we must continue to advocate for permanently protecting this irreplaceable remnant prairie. What can we do to save it? Contact Governor Pritzker to tell him how important it is to the biodiversity of our state. |

Mosquito Bill Passed
illinois legislature takes ecological standThe Illinois legislature just passed an important bill that requires training and licensing for companies that use barrier sprays against mosquitoes. While future advocacy efforts will seek to strengthen this legislation, it is a significant first step in ensuring that mosquito control methods are ecologically responsible. To promote environmental protection in your own yard, homeowners should know that the best way to reduce mosquitoes is to remove standing water. If mosquitoes become a nuisance, the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (NSMAD) will come treat your yard for FREE, using evidence-based methods that leave chemical sprays as a last resort. Contact them at the link below.

Village Board Passed Stronger Ordinance
GOOD NEWS FOR WILMETTE TREESThanks to the advocacy of League members, Go Green Wilmette, and many of our Wilmette friends and neighbors, the Village Board approved strong and positive changes to the village tree ordinance at their last board meeting on March 8, 2022. This new ordinance requires a permit for removing trees larger than 6" diameter, and it requires either fees or tree replacements for anything larger than 10", with higher fees for the removal of heritage trees, such as oaks and hickories. It includes much steeper fines for non-compliance, and it requires that neighbors be notified of any heritage tree removal from areas that are not a part of a new structure's direct footprint. LWV-W & Wilmette public library book discussionPlease join us virtually on March 23rd to discuss There Is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the Twenty-First Century by Fiona Hill. Hill is a British-American foreign affairs specialist and academic, who served as a former official at the US National Security Council and currently serves as a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. By the time she offered her testimony in the first impeachment inquiry of President Trump, Hill knew that the desperation of forgotten people was driving American politics over the brink. In this powerful, deeply personal account, she shares what she has learned, and shows why expanding opportunity is the only long-term hope for our democracy (From the publisher). Call to Action
protect the remnant prairie TODAYWhile Illinois is called the Prairie State, less than 0.01% of our native prairie landscape actually remains today. Click on the link below to tell the governor how important it is to the biodiversity of our state.

LWV-W & WILMETTE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOOK DISCUSSIONThis month, we will be discussing Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder. Through her journey, the author tells a compelling, eye-opening tale of the dark underbelly of the American economy, namely the invisible casualties of the Great Recession, who have taken to the road by the tens of thousands in late-model RVs, travel trailers and vans. In a secondhand vehicle she christens “Van Halen,” Bruder hits the road to learn more about this growing community of nomads, largely transient older Americans who have found that social security comes up short. Register below to discuss this story of survival, sacrifice, resilience and creativity.

Village Seeks Improved Compliance
Gas leaf blower ban begins on May 15Did you know that gas-powered leaf blowers are prohibited in Wilmette from May 15 - September 30? To improve compliance with this ordinance in 2021, the Village's newly-hired code enforcement officer will be issuing citations to offenders. When a company is cited, the homeowner will also be notified, to help increase awareness of the ordinance. If you hire a lawn care company, please remind them of the ordinance if they are not following it. Click below to find more useful information about the blowers and the ban.

Say No To Private Mosquito Abatement Services
control mosquitoes safely and effectivelyWorried about mosquitoes this summer? Before you call a private company to treat mosquitoes in your yard, call the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District for FREE assessment and treatment! Their targeted approach is more effective than the "barrier spraying" done by private companies, with much lower collateral damage to the environment. Conservation scientists are so concerned about the likelihood of collateral damage and pesticide resistance from commercial barrier spraying that legislation has been introduced to provide oversight of commercial companies and require common-sense measures such as evidence-based spraying and notification of neighbors. Click below to learn more about what you can do.

Congress Certifies Electoral College Vote
Abolish the electoral collegeThe presidential ballots cast by the Electoral College last month will be tallied in Congress on January 6. While this has historically been a perfunctory event, the League of Women Voters strongly believes that the direct-popular-vote method for electing the President and Vice-President is essential to representative government and that, therefore, the Electoral College should be abolished. The League has held this position since 1970 and has reaffirmed it several times, most recently in 2020. Find answers to your questions about the Electoral College here. Visit our Electoral College Reform page for further information.
