On August 28, the Village Board passed on consent two resolutions related to the environment:
Letter Sent by the League of Women Voters of Wilmette to the Wilmette Village Board on Sept 4, 2018
In our capacity as co-Presidents of the League of Women Voters of Wilmette (LWV-W), we commend the Environmental and Energy Commission (EEC) for its July 23rd recommendation to the Village Board to pass resolutions to:
The League’s support is based on our position on natural resources and the environment. Our position states, in part, to:
1) preserve the physical, chemical, and biological integrity of the ecosystem, with maximum protection of public health and the environment; and
2) promote an environment beneficial to life through the protection and wise management of natural resources in the public interest. In accordance with the LWV position, through the LWVUS UN Observers, the LWV has been a longstanding participant in the Annual Conference of the Parties to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which formulated the Kyoto Protocol and negotiated the Paris Agreement.
The LWV believes that as citizens of the world we must protect our planet from the physical, economic and public health effects of climate change while also supporting prosperity. The League believes that averting the damaging effects of climate change requires action from both individuals and governments at the local, state, national and international levels.
The LWVW supports the EEC’s recent recommendation to pass the above resolutions, based on our position and our belief that climate change is the greatest challenge to the balance of our ecosystem. The passing of these two resolutions would be an important step for Wilmette and its residents to increase their concerted efforts to fight climate change, promote a healthy environment for today’s generation and generations to follow and continue the Village of Wilmette’s role as model and leader for other communities.
Thank you for your consideration,
