Census

LWVUS POSITION IN BRIEF

  • The U.S. Census is required under the U.S. Constitution to occur every 10 years and the Census Bureau is in the process of counting every resident in the country.
  • The U.S. Census data is used to make decisions around education, healthcare, infrastructure, and political representation. With increased growth in the country, getting an accurate and complete count of every person living within is crucial to ensure that each state receives funding to support the number of residents in each state. This Census the focus continues to be on reaching hard to count communities and ensuring these communities get included in the Census count.
Census 2020

plans this year

For the first time ever, the 2020 Census will be primarily digitally based. Here in Wilmette, we will be working to ensure that all households complete the census and understand why it is important to our community.   It is also important that residents respond to the Census prior to mid-May, when Census takers start their door-to-door canvassing so that the limited assets available be used in hard-to-count communities.
The LWVW has been participating on Wilmette’s Complete Count Committee (CCC), a committee formed by the Village to promote a complete count in Wilmette.  To date activities have included educational presentations to Village education, religious and service organizations to inform them about the importance of their leadership roles in the community and ask them for their support of 2020 Census initiatives.  The CCC set up information tables at two events on March 8, Go Green Wilmette and Romona’s International Day. The CCC has also developed a communications plan to blanket the community with Census information.
More than 50 people attended on February 8th, 2020 to meet with Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, local elected officials and community leaders and heard about the importance of participating in the 2020 Census.

News and Latest Developments

Due to the impact of Covid-19, the Census Bureau is strongly encouraging people to respond on-line or over the phone to the 2020 Census.  On March 28th, the U.S. Census Bureau announced it is suspending 2020 Census field operations for two additional weeks to April 15, 2020. This is the second two-week extension announced by the Bureau.  These extensions most likely will impact when census takers commence door to door collection.
As of March 29, 48.1% of Wilmette households have responded to the Census.  This compares to the national response rate of 34.7% and the Illinois response rate of 37.6%.  Although Wilmette’s response rate is significantly higher than other areas of the country, it’s still very important to convince your family, friends and neighbors to respond.   A high Wilmette response rate means that Illinois and the federal government can use its scarce resources more wisely in hard to count areas of Illinois.  If you would like to track Wilmette’s response rate, or the rate of some other community, click on the Self Response Mapper below.
