responses to voter guide questions
1. Why are you running for school board and what are your qualifications?
I have three kids who are in the daycare and public school system and will be attending New Trier in the next few years. During the pandemic, I became more involved with the school policy and decision making because it is important to be ready for any unforeseen events that may impact the school. I want to make sure the school is ready to maintain the highest academic excellence at all times and always prioritize our childrens' needs. With a degree in communication arts and multiple sales roles in both real estate and the clothing industry, I am skilled at interacting with people with a variety of viewpoints and problem solving to find amicable solutions.
2. What are your top priorities for D203 and what do you hope to accomplish as a board member?
Academic excellence, fiscal and curriculum transparency, and a focus on mental health. Many students fell behind academically during the pandemic while also experiencing a negative impact on their mental health as a result of the lockdowns. I will make sure the school remedies these situations to get students back on track academically and mentally to ensure they continue to be properly equipped for college.
3. How should D203 address the different needs of all students?
Every student should feel included at New Trier, both in the halls and through the curriculum. Within the curriculum, we need to embrace the differences between students in a way that unites and empowers them, so that it translates to feelings of cohesiveness and respectful behavior in the hallways. Mental health and guidance counselor programs play a big role in this as well to address needs beyond what a teacher can provide. An inclusive school community where everyone feels welcome and respected regardless of race, religion, or upbringing is the ultimate goal.
4. What are your views on New Trier High School’s curriculum?
The 4 level system allows students to excel and progress at the proper level with peers of similar advancement. The range from basic level curriculum to rigorous programs differentiates New Trier from many other public schools. New Trier's college track curriculum seems to sufficiently prepare our children for college.
5. What do you feel the community’s role should be in public high school education?
As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. While teachers understand the students' academic needs, parents understand all of their childrens' vast and variable needs... so there has to be a very close collaboration and open communication between the parent community and the teachers to provide a complete and cohesive education for our children.
