bernie hossfeld
district 203 nths school board
responses to voter guide questions
1. Why are you running for school board and what are your qualifications?
I and my husband, Dr. George Hossfeld have lived in Wilmette for over 20 years. I’m a retired Emergency/Trauma nurse with 40 years of experience caring for the physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychological needs of individuals of all ages, races, and cultural backgrounds, from birth to death, with compassion and dignity.
I have volunteered as a nurse with an organization called, “Honor Flight Chicago.” This group takes WW II, Korean War, and Vietnam vets to Washington DC via air flights at no expense to them. I have seen and heard US history through the eyes and voices who those who experienced it in real life.
I want to give back to my community by supporting the growth and development of our future NTHS leaders as open-minded, accountable, compassionate individuals.
My life experiences of raising two adult children, actively participating in the lives of my three stepchildren and ten grandchildren, and my professional and volunteer life, prepare me to become a productive school board member.
2. What are your top priorities for D203 and what do you hope to accomplish as a board member?
My top priorities for District 203 are:
3. How should D203 address the different needs of all students?
District 203 should address the different needs of all students on an individual case-by-case basis. I would make decisions based on the facts and reality, not based on an ideology.
4. What are your views on New Trier High School’s curriculum?
I am new to this type of community service and am educating myself about the curriculums of the courses taught at NTHS, including Professional Development workshops for New Trier Area Teachers.
5. What do you feel the community’s role should be in public high school education?
I think the community’s role in public high school education is to get involved in additional ways other than paying taxes. I would like to see more education available to New Trier Township residents regarding the specific course curriculums, teaching modalities, and specific mandated reading.
I realize my background differs from other candidates, and I respect that. I hope you vote for me on April 4, so I can become a fresh set of eyes and ears to the current District 203 school board.
