​Equal Rights Amendment

​LWVUS POSITION IN BRIEF

  •  The League of Women Voters of the United States supports equal rights for all regardless of sex.
  • The League supports action to bring laws into compliance with the ERA: a) to eliminate or amend those laws that have the effect of discriminating on the basis of sex; b) to promote laws that support the goals of the ERA; c) to strengthen the enforcement of such existing laws.

On May 30, 2018, Illinois became the 37th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. The League of Women Voters of Wilmette was very involved with this effort and we thank all of you for making it happen! We continue to support efforts throughout the country.

The ERA was passed by Congress in 1972 and sent to the states for ratification. Three-quarters of the states—38 states—need to ratify the Amendment before it can be added to the Constitution.
